Elementary Classroom Daily Schedule
8:30-8:45 Students arrive and prepare for the day. After hanging up their backpacks, washing hands and writing down their lesson time, they may choose to go straight to work or read quietly until 8:45.
8:45-9:45 Group lessons by level. At this time students will be called to a lesson with other students in their year. Lessons last between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the topic and the needs of the students. Any student may attend any lesson regardless of level. Please note that these are not necessarily the only lessons a student will receive. See ‘Focus Groups’ below. The first lesson begins at 8:45, so it is important that your child arrives at school by this time.
8:45-11:10 Morning work session. Students work with the materials independently or with a peer. During this time I work with individual students and spend time observing the class.
11:10-11:30: Student led class meeting. Students set the agenda for this meeting using our ‘Agenda Board’. The classroom manager leads the meeting. When the students are finished discussing the issues from the board, I lead the remainder of the meeting.
11:30-12:00 Recess
12:00-12:30 Community Lunch
12:30-2:15 Afternoon work session and focus groups. Students return to their independent work. I lead small group lessons throughout the afternoon. These groups are designed to meet the needs and/or interests of a particular group of students. For example, I may call together 2 or 3 students to work on math facts or review a geography lesson. Or a group might approach me and say they would like to study ocean life. The possibilities are endless.

*Music class occurs over our typical lunch/recess time. The students decided at a class meeting that, on Wednesday, we will eat lunch from 11:00-11:30 and have recess from 12:30-1:00.
